Ise Distillery is the spirits plant of Ise-Man (伊勢萬), the only licensed brewer in the Ise-Shima region of Mie Prefecture. It sits in Obata-cho Akeno (小俣町明野) in Ise City and has made whisky since 2021. So far it has released exactly one bottling that qualifies as Japanese whisky under the industry standard: Single Malt Whisky Ise 2025 Edition, limited to 250 bottles. Its better-known Kamiji (神路) whiskies blend Ise-distilled malt with imported spirit.
Almost nothing in English explains that distinction. This guide covers who Ise-Man is, why a shochu maker spent years laying down spirit before it had a whisky of its own, what is actually in each bottle, and whether you can buy any of it outside Japan.
One clarification first. Ise’s most famous craft drinks name abroad is Ise Kadoya Brewery, the beer arm of the Nikenchaya Mochi Kadoya confectioner. That is a different company. Ise Distillery belongs to Ise-Man.
Who makes whisky in Ise
Ise-Man runs two production sites. The first is the Naiku-mae Sake Brewery (内宮前酒造場), a small sake house inside Okage Yokocho (おかげ横丁), the restored shopping street at the gates of Ise Grand Shrine’s Inner Shrine. There, brewers make the Okagesama (おかげさま) sake by hand. The second is the head-office plant in Akeno, which the company now calls Ise Distillery. It produces shochu, liqueurs, gin, and whisky.
A shochu plant before a whisky plant
The Akeno plant’s long-running product is Kounen (光年), a barrel-aged shochu the company says has been on sale for more than 30 years. It also makes Stella Half Moon, a yuzu and ume liqueur on a shochu base. Whisky came out of that distilling base, not the other way around. Ise-Man’s own description is that it applied shochu production skills, built up over many years, to whisky and gin.
That path is common in southern Japan. Kanosuke and Ontake in Kagoshima both grew out of shochu houses, and we cover the pattern in our Kanosuke distillery guide. What makes Ise different is the setting: it is the only distillery we know of that can sell a dram within walking distance of Japan’s most important Shinto shrine.
The parent company and its name
Ise-Man is part of IX Holdings, a local group whose companies include the Masuya rice-cracker business, a wedding venue near the Inner Shrine, and a tourism firm. The group explains its name as a statement of intent: the “I” is Ise-Shima, and the “X” stands for transforming it for a new era. Read that way, whisky is part of a regional strategy as much as a product launch. It gives shrine visitors a reason to remember Ise as a place that makes something new.
The water
Ise-Man says it uses underground water from two rivers. One is the Isuzu (五十鈴川), which flows through the shrine’s sacred precinct. The other is the Miyagawa (宮川), which Ise-Man notes has been named Japan’s cleanest river. The company does not state which source goes into the whisky specifically, so we will not either.
Why a shochu house waited years for whisky
Ise-Man describes whisky as “a dream held since the company’s founding,” realized in 2021. The more revealing detail is how long it prepared. According to the company, Ise Distillery spent over ten years maturing Canadian grain spirit in oak casks in Ise, specifically “with future whisky production in view.” The barrel now on display at the shrine-side shop has been used to age whisky since 2003.
In other words, Ise-Man bought time before it had a still running for malt. When its own malt spirit finally existed, it had mature grain ready to blend with it. That patience is why the first Kamiji could reach the market in 2021 at all.
What the name Kamiji means
Kamiji takes its name from Kamijiyama (神路山), the forested hill behind the Inner Shrine. The label borrows from a poem by the 12th-century monk-poet Saigyō (西行), who wrote about clear moonlight falling from Kamijiyama to light the world below. Ise-Man says it wanted a whisky that would “keep the drinker company through the night,” like that moonlight. That is why the label carries a moon motif.
The Pure Malt version uses a deep red label, chosen to suggest depth and warmth. Ise-Man says the two Kamiji expressions are meant to differ, not to form a good-better ladder.
The three whiskies and what is actually in them
This is where English-language listings usually go wrong. They describe all three as “Japanese whisky from Ise.” Ise-Man’s own spec sheets say otherwise, and the company is open about it.
| Bottling | What is in it | ABV / size | Price at Ise-Man |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blended Whisky Kamiji | Ise-distilled malt plus Canadian grain spirit aged over ten years in Ise | 43% / 700ml | ¥5,000 |
| Pure Malt Whisky Kamiji | Ise malt (sherry and bourbon casks) plus long-aged Scotch malt finished in bourbon casks | 43% / 700ml | ¥7,000 |
| Single Malt Whisky Ise 2025 Edition | 100% Ise-distilled medium-peated malt, single bourbon cask | 47% / 700ml | ¥10,000 |
Prices are tax-included figures from Ise-Man’s online store, checked October 8, 2026. At current exchange rates, ¥5,000 is very roughly $33 or £25. All three are 700ml (23.7 US fl oz).
Why Kamiji does not carry the Japanese whisky label
Under the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association standard, “Japanese whisky” must be mashed, fermented, distilled, aged at least three years, and bottled in Japan, with no imported spirit in the blend. Both Kamiji bottlings contain imported spirit, and the labels say so: the origin line on Blended Kamiji reads “made in Canada (grain spirits),” and Pure Malt Kamiji reads “made in Scotland, made in Japan.” We explain the rule in full in what counts as Japanese whisky, and the wider category in why some bottles say world blended whisky.
None of this is hidden. Ise-Man calls Kamiji “Ise-Shima’s first craft whisky” and reserves the phrase “Japanese whisky” for Single Malt Ise. We think that is the honest way to do it, and buyers should read the labels the same way.
Single Malt Ise: the first fully local bottling
Single Malt Ise 2025 Edition was distilled entirely from malt at Ise Distillery, using medium-peated barley and a single bourbon cask. Ise-Man’s product page says three years of aging. President Daisuke Kobayashi (小林大介) put a finer number on it to the Iseshima Keizai Shimbun: three years and eight months. He used the bottle to walk local press through the labeling rules, item by item, and said Ise clears every one of them.
The release was small. Ise-Man sold it online over three days in December 2025, and the company reports each day’s allocation sold out within a minute. It held back 10 bottles for the shrine-side shop’s opening day on August 6, 2026.
The Shikinen Sengu clock
The most interesting thing Ise-Man has said about its whisky is not about flavor. It is about time.
Ise Grand Shrine is rebuilt from scratch every 20 years in a ritual called Shikinen Sengu (式年遷宮). The next rebuilding is scheduled for 2033.
A 20-year single malt as the long-term goal
Kobayashi told the Iseshima Keizai Shimbun that the distillery’s “big goal” is a 20-year-old single malt, released to coincide with a future Sengu. In his words, matching the release to the shrine’s “most important historical cycle” would build the whisky’s value as “a spirit that moves forward with the region.” He called it the “next-generation” Sengu. Since Ise’s own malt has only been distilled since around 2021, a 20-year-old from that spirit could not be ready by 2033. The arithmetic points to a later cycle. That is our reading, not his statement.
He also gave the stock numbers behind the plan. Around 800 casks of Ise malt are maturing now, and the distillery fills roughly 80 to 100 more each year. He framed that as building quality and inventory at the same time.
Why that matters to a drinker
Most new Japanese distilleries talk in three-year horizons because they need cash flow. Ise-Man is telling its home audience it intends to hold spirit for two decades, and it has tied that promise to the one calendar every visitor to Ise understands. At the stated filling rate, older Ise single malts are a realistic prospect, and the 250-bottle first release suggests stock is being held back rather than sold young.
Ise-Jin: the gin that shows the house approach
Ise-Man’s gin, Ise-Jin (伊勢神), is a useful clue to how it thinks. It uses aosa seaweed and mitsuba from Ise-Shima, hojicha from Ise tea, and domestic yuzu, ume, and ginger. Its developer told the press the goal was never “just to make gin” but to work out “how to express Ise.” The bottle design is meant to evoke the shrine in the quiet of early morning. It scored 95 points and gold at IWSC 2026.
How to read the awards
Blended Kamiji won gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2022, its first year, and again in 2024. At IWSC 2024 it scored 98 points and received a Gold Outstanding medal, the top score in its category. Ise-Man says it was the only Japanese whisky maker to win that medal that year.
Two caveats are worth knowing. First, the IWSC award was in the Worldwide Whisky category, which fits a blend containing Canadian grain. Second, medals tell you a product cleared a judging panel on a given day, not that it suits you. Our guide to reading Japanese whisky awards covers how to weigh them.
Visiting Ise Distillery
The easiest way to try these whiskies is the Ise Distillery tasting shop, which opened on August 6, 2026 inside a converted storehouse at the Naiku-mae Sake Brewery in Okage Yokocho. We covered the opening in our news report on the shrine-side shop. The shop is open daily, and Iseshima Keizai Shimbun lists hours of 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
What a tasting costs
Pours are 20ml, served neat or on the rocks, or as a highball for ¥100 more. Pure Malt Kamiji is ¥500, Single Malt Ise 2025 Edition is ¥800, and Blended Kamiji is ¥1,100. Ise-Jin is ¥500 neat or ¥600 with soda. The shop also displays a life-size photo of the pot still and a cask in use since 2003.
The Akeno plant itself
We could not find a regular public tour of the Akeno distillery. The plant has opened to visitors during Kintetsu Railway walking events, including October 2023 and October 2024, when walkers could see the pot still and the cask warehouse.
Where to buy Ise whisky
In Japan: Ise-Man sells all three whiskies through its own online store, which ships within Japan, and at the Naiku-mae Sake Brewery. Ise-Jin gin is also sold through general liquor stores. If you are building a shopping list for a trip, our guide to where to buy Japanese whisky in Tokyo covers the big-city alternatives, though we would not expect Ise bottles to be common there.
In the US: We found no importer or retailer listing for Kamiji or Single Malt Ise. The company has not announced exports. Note also that many Japanese forwarding services cannot ship spirits to the US at all.
In the UK and EU: We found no regular retail listing either. Occasional bottles may surface through specialist shops or auctions, but with 250 bottles of the single malt in total, do not count on it. Our guide to importing whisky from Japan explains which routes work and which do not.
The honest answer for most readers is this: Ise whisky is a reason to go to Ise, not a bottle to hunt for at home. That is consistent with how Kobayashi describes the shop, as a place where visitors can take home a bottle as a memory of the trip.
What this means if you drink Japanese whisky
Ise Distillery is not trying to compete on volume or export reach. It is a regional maker with a clear story: a shochu house that spent more than a decade preparing, labels its blends truthfully, and is pacing its single malt to a 20-year shrine ritual. For a collector, the first editions of Single Malt Ise are the bottlings to watch. For a traveler, a ¥800 pour a few minutes from the Inner Shrine is one of the more distinctive whisky stops in Japan. For everyone else, Kamiji is a good lesson in reading the small print on a Japanese label. You can find Ise alongside the rest of the country’s producers in our list of Japanese whisky distilleries.
FAQ
Q: Is Kamiji a Japanese whisky?
A: Not under the industry labeling standard. Blended Kamiji contains Canadian grain spirit and Pure Malt Kamiji contains Scotch malt, alongside malt distilled in Ise. Ise-Man markets them as craft whisky from Ise-Shima and uses the term Japanese whisky only for Single Malt Ise.
Q: Who owns Ise Distillery?
A: Ise Distillery is the Akeno production site of Ise-Man Co., Ltd., a sake and shochu maker in Ise City, Mie Prefecture. Ise-Man belongs to IX Holdings, a local group that also includes the Masuya rice-cracker business and several tourism companies in Ise-Shima.
Q: Can I visit Ise Distillery?
A: The Akeno plant does not appear to run regular public tours, though it has opened during Kintetsu walking events. The practical option is the Ise Distillery tasting shop in Okage Yokocho, near the Inner Shrine, which offers paid 20ml tastings of all three whiskies daily.
Q: Can I buy Ise whisky in the US or UK?
A: We found no regular retail listings outside Japan, and Ise-Man has not announced exports. The single malt was limited to 250 bottles. Buying at the shrine-side shop or through Ise-Man’s domestic online store while in Japan is currently the only reliable route.
