JALUX, the trading company of the Japan Airlines group, will release Ichiro’s Malt Chichibu Ridge & Silver Oak Wine Cask Finish at the end of November 2026. The single malt was made with Venture Whisky (ベンチャーウイスキー), the company behind Chichibu (秩父) distillery, and finished in casks from two California wineries, Ridge Vineyards and Silver Oak. JALUX announced the bottling on October 27, 2026 as a special edition marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. It is the third Chichibu release built around Silver Oak casks, after editions in 2022 and 2023, and the first to bring in a second American winery. Unusually for a limited Chichibu bottling, JALUX says it will also be sold in duty-free shops outside Japan.
The whisky goes out under SONGS OF CASKS, a JALUX label that pairs Japanese craft distilleries with selected casks from Japan and abroad. According to the company, the vatting was selected from the roughly 30,000 casks now resting in Chichibu’s warehouses and is a small-batch release. JALUX has not published a bottle count, only that quantities are limited.
Three casks, three ages
The recipe is unusually detailed for a limited release. JALUX lists three components. The first is 10-year-old Chichibu spirit that spent three years in its first cask before moving into an ex-Silver Oak barrel for a further seven years. The company says this part brings power. The second is 7-year-old spirit that also spent three years in its first cask and then about four years in an ex-Ridge barrel, described as the softer side of the blend. The third is 9-year-old Chichibu matured in ex-bourbon barrels, which JALUX describes as the bridge between the two wine casks and the part that carries the distillery’s own character. Both wineries mature their wines in American oak, so every component in the bottle has spent its life in American wood.
The whisky is bottled at 63% ABV in a 700ml bottle, with a suggested retail price of 99,000 yen including tax. Shipping starts at the end of November 2026. JALUX’s tasting note describes blackberry and cassis fruit, a dense, brownie-like palate and a finish of nutmeg and clove. Those are the producer’s words. We have not tasted the whisky.
The two wineries were chosen with the anniversary in mind. Ridge Vineyards, based in the Santa Cruz Mountains, is known for long-lived wines aged mainly in American oak, and its Monte Bello 1971 was one of the wines entered in the 1976 “Judgment of Paris” tasting, held in the year of the US bicentennial. Silver Oak was founded in Napa in 1972 and built its name on Cabernet Sauvignon aged only in American oak. It is one of the few wineries that owns its own cooperage and oak forest.
Where it will be sold
JALUX plans to sell the bottle through major department stores and specialist liquor shops in Japan, through JAL Mall, the airline group’s online store, and through duty-free shops outside Japan. The announcement does not name the overseas shops or say how many bottles each channel will receive, and it does not mention a US release despite the American theme. For readers abroad, the duty-free line is the important one. Many limited Chichibu bottlings are sold only in Japan, and Japanese retailers generally cannot ship spirits overseas. A duty-free allocation means some of this whisky is meant for travelers from the start.
Why this matters
The release says a lot about where Chichibu now stands. Ichiro Akuto (肥土伊知郎) founded Venture Whisky in 2004 and started distilling at Chichibu in 2008, with a small pair of stills and a focus on doing as much as possible in-house, from floor malting to cask repair. Our Chichibu distillery guide covers that history. Eighteen years later, the distillery has a stock of around 30,000 casks, deep enough to hold 10-year-old wine-cask spirit for a partner project. In 2024 Akuto became the fifth Japanese person, and the first from a craft distillery, to be inducted into Whisky Magazine’s Hall of Fame.
The cask details are also worth a closer look. In whisky, a “finish” usually means a few months to two years in a second cask. Here the Silver Oak component spent seven years in wine wood after only three years in its first cask, so most of its life has been in the second cask. In practice this is closer to double maturation than to a short finish, and it fits Chichibu’s habit of long, patient experiments with wood. Our explainer on Japanese whisky cask types sets out how wine, bourbon and sherry casks differ.
Finally, the bottle shows how private-label partnerships are becoming a real part of the Japanese craft market. Retailers, hotels and now an airline trading company commission their own bottlings from small distilleries, and the cask stock to supply them is now there. For Chichibu, which still releases much of its whisky in small, quickly sold batches, a partner with airport and duty-free reach is one of the few ways to put limited whisky in front of travelers. Earlier this month the distillery also brought back Chichibu The Peated after four years, a much cheaper release at 17,600 yen, which shows the range of what the distillery is now bottling.
For readers outside Japan
If you are flying through Japan from the end of November, check the duty-free shops on your route and ask for the bottle by name, Ichiro’s Malt Chichibu Ridge & Silver Oak Wine Cask Finish. Our Narita duty-free guide explains what is usually on the shelf and how airport allowances work. JALUX has not said which overseas duty-free shops will carry it, so availability outside Japan is not yet clear. Buying in a Japanese department store is the other realistic route, and our guide to bringing whisky home from Japan covers customs allowances.
At 99,000 yen, the bottle is priced for collectors. If you plan to wait for the secondary market, our guide to buying at auction explains how to check provenance and fees. At 63% ABV, it is also a high-strength whisky; our guide to cask strength Japanese whisky explains how to add water to strong spirits.
If you want Chichibu spirit without the hunt, Venture Whisky’s widely exported blend is the easy starting point. Our Ichiro’s Malt & Grain review covers the bottle you are most likely to find in the US, UK and Europe, and our US buying guide lists specialist retailers.
